How Disney+’s Day One Subscriber Count Stacks Up Against Its Rivals

10 million subscribers sounds like a lot of people, but how does that number stack up against Disney+’s streaming rivals?

After months of hype, Disney+ finally launched in the US last week. Turns out the hype surrounding the launch of the new streaming service was very much real. On launch day, more than 10 million people signed up to Disney+. There were some issues with it on that first day, but can you really complain when 10 million people are trying to access something at the same time?

10 million subscribers in one day sounds like a lot, and that’s because it is. However, how does that compare to other streaming services? In terms of Disney+’s biggest rival Netflix, there’s still a long way to go. Netflix had 158 million subscribers at last count. Despite getting 10 million subscribers in one day, Disney doesn’t envision surpassing Netflix for a while.

According to CNBC, Disney is aiming to have between 60 and 90 million subscribers by 2024. Since it still has the rest of the world and another five years to achieve that, we definitely think that’s doable. As for its initial 10 million, that figure already has Disney+ ahead of some other major streaming services. CBS All Access, ESPN+, and the WWE Network are yet to hit that number, and might never reach it.

Disney executives will be making sure they don’t get ahead of themselves just yet. The service offers a seven-day free trial, so chances are a chunk of that 10 million will disappear again after week one. Verizon subscribers have a full year of Disney+ for free too, so some of those could no longer be subscribers 12 months from now. There are a lot of caveats and addendums to take into consideration.

All of that being said, no matter what happens, 10 million on day one has to be considered a massive win. It will be very interesting to see how that number changes as time passes and Disney+ is rolled out in other countries. Even if it doesn’t challenge Netflix any time soon, it’s almost inevitable that Disney+ will be a solid number two in the streaming business before long.
