Every year, there are different trends in popular cinema. 2019 has been dominated by remakes, animation, and several films released by the Marvel franchise. The top spot, claimed by Avengers: Endgame, has grossed almost $3 billion at the box office since it’s late April release date. Not only is it the biggest film of the year, but it has also earned more in box office sales than any other film, surpassing previous record-holders, Avatar and Titanic. 

With just a few weeks left in the year, it’s unlikely that any other films will do as well as these releases. If you haven’t seen these yet, most of them are now available to rent online, and some are still in theatres. Here are the top-grossing films of 2019.

The musical score was praised, as was Nyong’o’s performance. As the second highest-grossing horror film of 2019, Us has earned $255 million at the box office.

The sequel to the 2017 re-adaptation of Stephen King’s It, It: Chapter Two, opened in theatres in September to mixed reviews. For longtime fans of King, the much-anticipated sequel to It didn’t deliver. With a runtime of 169 minutes, critics argued that the film was far too long, and didn’t pack as many scary scenes as the first chapter.

Rotten Tomatoes has given the film an approval rating of 63%, and CinemaScore gave it a rating of B+. Despite this, the visual effects are quite impressive, and for horror lovers, it’s a must-watch. The film has made $462 million at the box office so far.

Certainly, viewers are getting a little bit fed up with this series, which is reflected in their Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of only 67%. Despite this, the film is one of the top earners at the box office for 2019.

Based on the DC Comics Batman comic, Joker is a dark, psychological thriller that provides a possible backstory to the villainous character. Earning over $985 million since it’s early October release date, it is already the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

Though the reviews are mediocre on critic sites, Joaquin Phoenix has been praised for his ability to portray the dark side of human nature.
