– Ilya, what is photography for you and why did you choose it as a professional field of activity?

– I started shooting in 2007, and from that moment on, my perception of photography has been constantly evolving and changing. Initially, it was just a hobby – by the time I entered the university (for an IT specialty), I was already mastering Photoshop, making friends with several designers, trying to make websites, and happily studying complex pictures like movie posters and Western advertisements. A few years later, I started making money in photography, and this was a great opportunity to realize my creative ideas and at the same time make money on new equipment. In addition, thanks to photography, I was able to overcome my fear of communicating with strangers and became very socially active. This allowed me to move forward and move to Moscow by 2012. At this moment, I was finally convinced that photography is my professional path, which gives me access to interesting projects, new acquaintances, allows me to travel and forms in me the habit of being responsible. So photography actually turned me into a brand – a recognizable name and a recognizable style that helped me get into the world of big advertising photography. At this point, the very concept of creativity in photography for me has changed a little – now I try to take pictures only if they have a real use. Stories of interesting people, projects or advertisements. Preparing and working with big tasks has become a kind of alternative creativity for me, and this is a new stage that I really like as hell.which helped me get into the world of great advertising photography. – How did your creative path begin? And were there any difficulties in the initial stages?

– The creative path, as often happens, began mostly with experiments – I wanted to figure out with the camera and techniques as soon as possible in order to get good photos, close in quality to the works of famous photographers and idols. Ten years later, when there were almost no technical questions left, I realized that studying photography was the coolest and most interesting time in my career. Since I started shooting at the age of 17, and received my first commercial orders in my second year at university, I had enough time to be very comfortable and gradually enter the world of photography and gain experience. The hardest part was later, with the move to Moscow, and then with the entry to the Los Angeles market – whether you like it or not, for each move you will have to completely update your portfolio. At such moments, you have only invaluable experience that helps you quickly overcome the painful period of adaptation.

– What inspires you and how do you come up with subjects for your pictures?

– Several years ago I almost completely lost my main source of inspiration – other people’s photos. Now I try to pay more attention to the ideas themselves and their application in commercial projects. When it comes to advertising orders, plots are invented based on the task. For example, there is a rather small chance that dramatic shots with social connotations will suit the client for advertising a car. Rather, he will be more interested in a story about a journey or spectacular shots on beautiful tracks in Austria. On large advertising projects, all ideas, as a rule, reach you ready-made from the client’s creative department or agency. But the most interesting thing is the stories of people. In fact, this is a ready-made world of incredible plots with details that are sometimes difficult to imagine yourself.

– Tell us more about filming for VR advertising.

– All my childhood I grew up on console, and then on computer games, in which there was a cool plot and freedom of action. I tremendously appreciate this experience, because it allows you not only to be in the thick of the action, but also to examine scenes and characters in detail from different angles, analyzing the work of professional game designers and screenwriters. Therefore, when I found out about the first projects with games in virtual reality, I certainly wanted to shoot ads for them. This is a fairly fresh format on the immersive entertainment market, so such sites need advertising with the participation of real people. Thanks to my strong quest portfolio, I was immediately invited to do this kind of VR filming, and it was incredibly cool. Agree with a team of strong 3D artists on the developer’s side, add your compositing / retouching skills, and you get almost unlimited possibilities for commercial creativity – unlike living physical scenery, in the virtual world you can create any scene and use such angles and light schemes as you want. Perhaps the hardest part is to think and prepare everything in advance. To do this, you will have to put on a helmet, immerse yourself in the 3D world, inspect the available locations, choose angles, take screenshots and storyboards, set similar lighting on models and collect all the material into a coherent advertising series. A very interesting process and an unusual result.the hardest part is to think over and prepare everything in advance.
